Holiday in Bretagne   2000-06-03 to 2000-06-18

The idea behind this holiday was twofold:  we needed a rest, and I wanted to read up on Egyptian history in preparation for an archeological tour in January 2001.  My finger had been operated for tendon trouble, so we could not really go to a beach or drive around sightseeing.    On Marcel's recommendation, we decided to go to a small hotel at the coast of Brittany for two weeks of half-board lazing.

We left Friday 2 June, and as my finger would perhaps make driving difficult, we had planned go to Lyon in the evening and put the car on the train to Auray where we would arrive in the morning of the 3rd.    We did get there, but not by train: a strike at the SNCF forced us to go by car all the way.    So we slept in St Amand the first night, then got to the hotel late the second day.   On the way we stopped in Chenonceaux to see the Château de Chenonceau(*).

We arrived in the evening of Saturday 3 June, instead of the morning.  On Sunday, we visited Concarneau, bought some pullovers (it was cold!) and passed by Bénodet. On our return we walked on Raguenès plage.

On Monday, I still did not get to do any studying of Egyptian history; we went to Quimper and Locronan. After a look at Kerlaz, this also took us to Douarnenez, which was not very interesting.

On Tuesday, we went on a tour of the dolmen and menhirs. First to Hennebont, where we had to look really hard to find the dolmen. Then we stopped in Port Louis to visit the maritime museum in the fort. Then on to Erdeven where there are some alignments. We stopped for lunch at St Cado, previously a tiny island, but now connected with a narrow stone bridge.   The most impressive stone alignments are at Carnac.   We returned via the tumulus St Michel and the prehistory museum in Carnac

Wednesday we went "not so far". Port Manech, Pouldu, Larmor plage (where we got sunburnt) and into Lorient but that was a mistake: nothing to see. Kerascoët is one of the local hamlets with thatched-roof houses.

Thursday we made a larger tour of the entire peninsula, starting at Douarnenez and going counter-clockwise. This takes quite some time, because there are many "pointes" from which there are nice views. The westernmost point is the "Pointe du Raz". At the last point, the "Pointe de la Torche" there were surfers.

On the 9th to the 12th, we just hung around, read and lazed. On Friday we did make a short trip to Concarneau to get some more pullovers. On Saturday we went to Trévignon for crèpes at lunch time. On Sunday we returned to that same restaurant for more crèpes, and at that time saw interesting surfing behind "parapente" sails. A surfer on a surfboard lets himself be pulled by a giant kite in the form of a curved sail. When he falls over, the sail just goes into a stable state hanging in the air just above the surfer. Very impressive. They get high speeds and can tack!

Some local walks on the beaches revealed that most of the pollution from the disaster with the oil tanker "Erika" was cleaned. But the region where we were was not very afflicted. On Monday we had lunch in Tregunc (pancakes and frites; I looked up words in the Breton-French dictionary from the café's library. Many cafés have collections of games and books at the disposal of the guests.)

On Tuesday 13, we made a trip to the prehistoric site of Locmariaquer and to the city of Vannes: ->Auray -> Dolmen de Maré Kéridhed ->Plouharnel->Quiberon Port Haliguen, Berg er Vil, Kergroix, ... -> Carnac -> Locmariaquer: table des Marchands, grand menhir, ... Pierres plates. Vannes.

Wednesday we spent exploring Pont Aven, a tiny city just north from us, and that we had not spent any time in yet. It turned out to be very pleasant. The river ends here in the bay, so it is heavily influenced by the tides.

Thursday we went back to Pont Aven and also to Trévignon.

Friday we rested and packed in the evening. On Saturday we left at 07:00 for the long trip back: Vannes, Nantes, Angers, Tours, Vierzon, Bourges, Moulin, Macon, Bourg-en-Bresse, Nantua, Genève. That was 970 km and took 12 hours.
