These are extreme "entrenched" meanders of the San Juan river.
We are at over 1500m. As almost everywhere around here, this is very arid land with rainfall only from July to October.
Average high and low temperatures are -1.5ºC in winter to 31ºC in summer, with extremes from -20ºC to 43ºC.
